The Health Edit is a company founded by me, Bal Matharu.
I qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 2001 and I had been working in the NHS as an Advanced Respiratory Specialist Physiotherapist until 2022.
Following a period of retraining as a Health Coach, I work on my passion for helping people take back ownership of their health through simple lifestyle changes.
Along with my medical background and skills in root cause analysis I help my clients get to the root cause of their chronic illnesses' and help them pivot to take charge and change their habits and behaviours around their health.
In January 2024, I released a self-help guide on Morning Routines, simple habits people can add to improve their health and their life. A Link to this can be found on the Services Page
I am also actively working towards a PhD in Lifestyle Medicine studying the effects of morning routines and breathwork on health, vitality and longevity.
I live in the UK, with my husband Raj and 2 teenage kids and love travelling and connecting with people from around the world - the enjoyment of being immersed in different cultures.
I am passionate about helping people, so connect on a call with me today to see how I can help you make a health breakthrough too.
Like many healthcare workers during the pandemic, I was working too many hours - both low staffing levels and high demand drove me to work multiple jobs from ICU, to the only respiratory cover in a community discharge team, to weekend bank cover on medical wards and rehab on weekends for the little elective surgery that was able to go ahead.
Working on adrenaline, with very little sleep, picking up food on the go & not spending much time with my family it was no wonder that I started becoming disoriented and distanced from my wider support system. I had 2 close weddings during this time and I was disengaged, not able to disconnect a celebration from the heartbreak of lives lost in the pandemic - both patients and colleagues.
Both my physical health and mental health were falling to pieces.
I still remember that time when my body physically refused to get up and go in, I’d hit that brick wall and I was forced to rest, I couldn’t carry on and my mind, body & soul were unanimous in that decision.
Shortly after I handed in my notice after 20+ years in the NHS, the pension wasn't worth sacrificing my own health for.
Working during this time I had seen first-hand the impact of inflammatory lifestyles on survival rates and I had witnessed the breakdown of my own physical and mental health. I needed to feel better and I wanted the world to feel better and more empowered taking ownership of their health and vitality. I started my journey to never be a statistic in the health (sick) care system and to help others do the same.
I retrained as a Health Coach because my passion is in helping people transform their health - to do this by embedding simple routines and habits to pivot from living in survival mode to flourishing and operating in peak health and performance.
The aim: to step away from today's inflammatory lifestyle, embrace the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine and enjoy a healthy, more vibrant, more fulfilling life.
This is the journey I am on and I help others do the same.
